CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Caiden

A huge part of doing business is schmoozing your prospective partners or investors. It’s a fact everyone at my level takes advantage of, including myself. I’ve been flown all over the world to dine with foreign dignitaries, real-estate moguls, and hotel royalty under the guise of “doing business.”

It’s complete bullshit and a waste of time.

Contracts don’t require beluga caviar, Wagyu steak, and bottles of Cristal to sign on the dotted line. But it’s all part of the dance, and if you want to play to win, you have to follow certain rules.

Tonight, it’s my turn to play the part of the gracious host to my new East Coast business associates who are working with me to build a Nightfall in New York City. I flew them out to Vegas on my G6, gave them each ten-thousand-dollar markers to blow in my casino this afternoon, and now I’m treating them to a five-course meal at my three-Michelin-star restaurant on the top floor of the Nightfall Tower. (Yes, there is a tower in the hotel, but my office is closer to the middle, so the Rapunzel comparison is still asinine.)

Being social isn’t my strong suit. There are two things I know how to do well: serve my people as their king and make a shit ton of money with investments, real estate, casinos, and more.

The irony of these business dinners, though, is that no one wants to talk about business, which is why Tiernan and Finnian always attend with me. Tier works his magic and charms anyone I put in front of him with jokes and flattery while Finn is great with the obligatory male sports talk and discussing current events.

It allows me to add cursory statements now and again without having to put too much effort into the conversation.

Tonight, however, I could’ve told my brothers to stay home, and it wouldn’t have made a damn bit of difference, because they’re not the ones stealing the show.

It’s Bryn.

From the moment we arrived in the restaurant, she had all five New Yorkers eating out of the palm of her hand, drawing everyone’s attention with ease and schmoozing like she was getting paid for it.

I guess she used to be. She said she was in public relations back home but was between jobs right now, and I can’t help but wonder why that is. Had to be her doing because with the expert way she’s working the room, a company would have to be stupid to get rid of her.

Our group of twelve is seated at a large round table, and despite the distance it creates, Bryn—who is seated to my left—has made sure to engage each of them in individual conversations as well as getting the whole group to talk and laugh about everything from the funniest Super Bowl commercials to arguing over whose state has the harshest winters.

Everyone is so wrapped up in having a good time with Bryn that they haven’t noticed my silence or that I can’t seem to take my eyes off her.
